I think based on these more detailed pics, I should be able to paint solid black tribal tattoos on my orks like you did with the blue as long as I'm painting the tattoos outside of the shaded areas and not following the same contours.

You got it. I've still got a lot of work to do on my army (conversions, priming, etc.), but my Speed Freeks are my top priority so as soon as I get some to that point, I will definitely post pics.
