You should definitely invest in a quality airbrush to base coat these if you haven't already. I wouldn't bother with the GW, get a quality brush and your own air compressor, by the end of the process you will have saved money by not buying $8 of AIR in a CAN.

Need some advice guys...

I've been reading up about painting UM's and I've come across multiple versions all from GW sources

The base colour has been indicated as UM Blue OR Regal Blue OR (the new Foudation colour) Mordian Blue

WHICH is the Ultramarines colour

I know one answer is... whatever colour that YOU want to paint them

BUT... why are there differences... Comments please

Mik

From the options given...

Regal blue undercoat.
UM blue highlights.

Thanks mate... I like the sound of that combination

Any clues as for the many different options offered by GW (other than a reason to sell new paint colours of course)

I'm sure that they found their previous paints faulty-example too thin or didnt coat in layers well-and just decided to mix differently with cheaper materials to make a quick buck. And by make a quick buck I mean do what's best for the customer, paint and whatnot.

I would think you would save money using the Mordian Blue but you would probably have do that then the Regal followed by Ultra that was already stated. (THe foundation paints go a longer way with the air brush because of their thickness they have to be watered down more with not much of a loss in colour.)

Hi all

Sorry for the missing life

I've been buying more stuff... I'm waiting for delivery

On the way is a spray gun, GW Mega Paint set, rare earth magnets, and 2x Realm of Battle

My wife still worships me (athough I worship her more), the basement is getting crowded, and...

I'm doing this project right... I'm taking your support, comments and advice (amused by any negativity), and taking my time to ensure an excellent result.

I"M NOT EXPECTING A GD RESULT... but it will be awsome to see all that blue

Thankx again and be patient... I'm still here

Mik

I wasn't expecting a GD result either. Funny that. Nevertheless, especially since I live fairly close to Brisbane, I certainly hope you intend to showcase this army one day.

Damnation, that's good lookin' stuff.

Investing in an airbrush is definitely a very good idea.

And you really, really must face off against HBMC at some point.

Oh, and with all that armor, maybe a couple thunderhawk transporters are a good idea?

Man I calculated my apoc points up 20000+ pts without my wolves but with space wolf thunder hawk. The thunder hawk needs to be finished. The interior is painted need a air flamer for the outside. Get a badger air brush adapter for a compresser and you don't need canned air.

Still waiting for the painting components to be delivered, however, the rare earth magnets have arrived

So while I'm waiting...

I was asked why I only had 1 Razorback (the answer being only one came with the Battle Company box), but it made me think...

I've got 30 Rhino variants and if I used RE magnets on side hatches (predator sponsons) and roof panels (predator and whirlwind turret mount panels) I could interchange them as required... with a few spare bitz, I can present 30 Rhino's or 5 Razorbacks at the pull of a magnet.

I believe that I have enough varieties of Predator (Annhilator/Destructor) and sponson fitouts (HB or Lascannon) to not worry about a need for swap over with RE mounts on these.

Question though, for you RE experienced lot... do you use plastic glue or super glue to affix them in place?

I will be starting right away and pix will follow as before.

Mik

First RE magnet mock up is working very well... in fact I'm stunned how well

My plan is to convert a number of my Predators and Whirlwinds into Rhino's as required

I will magnetise the sponson panel to be interchanged with a magnetised Rhino side panel, and magnetise the roof access panel to interchange with a Rhino roof panel or a Razorback roof panel.

They will give me Rhino's and a Razorback to transport my second Battle Company, instead of Drop Pods, as required

Unfortunatelly, my camera is playing up with close up shots - too blured

Good pix to follow ASAP

Mik

Update...

Not really happy with pix though

For the side hatch, a hole was partially drilled (not all the way through) then the RE magnets x2 placed partly in holes (they stick up a bit)

For the sponson plate, a hole was drilled all the way through then the RE magnets x2 placed fully in holes flush on the inside rim (sticks out on the outside a bit) otherwise the panel would not fit in position

A hole was drilled all the way through through the side edge of the hatch frame then the RE magnets x2 placed fully in holes flush on the inside rim (sticks out on the outside a bit) otherwise the panel would not fit in position

RE magnet in place from the outside

My brain is completely recoiling in fear of trying to get my Tyranids up to 50K points.

Hive Tyrant with Tyrant Guard: 300 points.

194 broods of Spineguants without number, full 32 units per brood = 6208 Gaunts.

With about 50 points left over. Maybe throw in a single Biovore.

Little update...

Paint delivery has been delayed... now Dec 7

RE conversions going along well... 6x Predators now done

That leaves 4 Predators and 5 Whirlwinds left, should only take a couple of days

Then I'm setting my table back up (12' x 6') ready for the RoB gameboards

Hi,
I just registered here on dakkadakka to reply to this thread. What an enormous project

I refuse to think you may not be able to do this. I have seen some people doing ver ygood quality in a good time.
You may know the warseer site.
There in the scifi logs forum a user named Bulldog UK does an army called Crimson Ultrawings. He has tons of stuff aswell, maybe not as much as you plan, but who does so anyway?
However, this guy uses a spraying technique. And then some highlighting. This stuff actually has top quality, though done very fast.
You should check it out. If you are interested, I provide the link, if that bloody site will ever let me in again

Cheers to you mate, and may your motivation never fail you!

Thank You Warflag... yes, that kind of painting plan is what I intend to use.

Thanks again for your interest

Motivation will never be a problem... although my wife supports me 100% - if I stop befor its all done... I will be 100% dead - she promises!!

Good girl

But I guess, if I bought that much stuff and let it rot in the closet, I´d be 100% dead too...

Share some of those techniques, if you don´t mind. I´m very much interested, how this works. I personally am more of a detail freak.
My work usually takes ages.

Usually my reaction would be ewwwww Ultramarines. But this is brilliant, i dont think this would work with any other chapter, i just cant imagine a crimson fist 50k force or an imperial fist one.

I would go with a lighter blue than Regal. I use it quite a lot for my Dwarves in LOTR, and it's fairly dark, too dark I would say for Ultramarines. Perahps Enchanted Blue with Ultramarines blue highlights?
